Best Laid Plans of Lions and Men
We answer the following question dating back to J. E. Littlewood (1885–1977): Can two lions catch a man in a bounded area with rectifiable lakes? The lions and the man are all assumed to be points moving with at most unit speed. That the lakes are rectifiable means that their boundaries are finitely long. This requirement is to avoid pathological examples where the man survives forever because ...
متن کاملThe best laid schemes of airway repair.
Schemes of homeostasis and repair The mouse trachea is lined by basal, secretory and ciliated cells. Previous genetic lineage tracing studies have shown that in the homeostatic and repairing mouse trachea, basal cells are widespread, multipotent progenitor cells capable of both long-term self-renewal and differentiation into ciliated and secretory cells [3, 4]. Similar experiments have also sho...
متن کاملThe Best Laid Plans of Robots and Men
The best laid plans of robots and men often go awry. In dangerous and uncertain environments initial plans must be revised as robots fail, additional robots join the team, robots discover inconsistencies in their model of the problem, etc. Communication failures hamper this replanning. We introduce fractured subteams as a novel formalism for modeling breakdowns in communication. We present a hy...

متن کاملThe promise of patient-derived xenografts: the best laid plans of mice and men.
Compared with xenografts from previously established cell lines, patient-derived xenografts may more faithfully recapitulate the molecular diversity, cellular heterogeneity, and histology seen in patient tumors, although other limitations of murine models remain. The ability of these models to inform clinical development and answer mechanistic questions will determine their ultimate use.
